about

This poem, by Lieutenant-Colonel john McCrae, M.D., was an instant success when it was first published following the horrendous Second Battle of Ypres. Poppies themselves are a flower mythologized tremendously in many cultures, from being an emblem of peace or opiate rest, to their ironic propensity for thriving in the trenches and no-man's-lands of the War. It is appropriate that the "Great War Sextet" begins with this work, recited and heard by millions around the world on Remembrance Day or on other memorial ceremonies.

lyrics

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hand we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
